The image of wood as construction material presents a challenge: first rediscovered under the impression of resource limitation during the 1970ies, it earned a “backward”, low-quality, ecological touch. Today, a new generation of consumers recognises the modernity of wood. Remarkably versatile, wood fits precisely into a rapidly changing civilisation scenario: besides its unique character, it adds excellent thermal insulation properties, room climate and positive health effects add to the advantages of wood buildings. Furthermore it has positive effects on sustainability and optimised waste management, thus leaving a light ecological footprint.
Still, these qualities are not fully established in the market (e.g. the timber-construction rate
in NRW sums up to only 8,5% in 2007). To fill competence gaps, an inter- and intraregional RTD and innovation process involving education and qualification is necessary. The still very low rate of innovation expenditures in the forest-based sector shows the urgent need for RTD transfer to SME`s.

On the other hand, public awareness is determined by a lack of information. Common prejudices against timber architecture concern fire resistance, sound insulation, duration, and stability. Exemplary multi-storey timber buildings in an urban architectural environment are still too few to act as catalyst.

IN2WOOD aims at building an interregional competence network for timber construction. The awareness for timber construction competence and innovation among professionally related groups like architects, urban planners, civil engineers as well as building trade organisations and contractors is evaluated. Specified demand for RTD- and competence development including an inter-regional comparison will be assessed. The objectives involve:

  • Lobbying for wood as a modern, intelligent and energy efficient building construction material to abolish prejudices among target groups, and to achieve more wood-friendly building regulations to lower existing market barriers, to gain access to new markets and to reach a higher market penetration
  • Development of sustainable out-of-the-box solutions for a broad range of building applications including new private and commercial buildings as well as the energy-efficient modernization of existing urban multi-storey blocks of flats.
  • Creation of concepts and tools for a holistic industrialized process linking together professional planning, high quality prefabrication, and an industrialized on-site assembly process to make wood the most viable solution for private houses, commercial buildings, and urban renewals regarding price, environmental impact and living standards
  • Development and implementation of qualification and training to provide high quality wood constructions, and to offer an attractive working environment with focus on young employees
  • Development and establishment of a cross border, interregional exchange programme for the qualification and education to support knowledge transfer to build up capacities of regional actors in this sector

IN2WOOD's RTD questions target in particular the following topics:

  • Wood construction awareness in professional target groups and among decisions makers (architects/urban planners, building associations, political stakeholders)
  • Competence gaps in the education and qualification system (research and higher education centres, qualification and training programs, competence centres, etc.)
  • Legal framework and building regulations
  • Market segments (segments for new buildings, renewals and renovation activities, energy efficient building modernisation)
